The ruins of Werdenfels Castle are located about 80 metres above the Loisachtal valley between Garmisch and Farchant. Since the 13th century, it’s been an important landmark and it even gave the Werdenfelser Land region its name. What used to be an impressive fortress is now a ruin full of mysteries and a popular excursion destination for hikers.
Hiking tip for the whole family: The fortress educational trail lets little and grown-up hikers walk in the footsteps of old counts and lords. The four-kilometre-long trail takes you on a journey back in time. A total of 15 info boards along the edge of the trail tell you more about the history of the castle and its former residents.
And in case you’d like to try some culinary delicacies, you’ve got two amazing opportunities to do so: Berggasthof Pflegersee (inn) and the Werdenfelser hut.
