Kirchdorf Wamberg

At about 1,000 metres above sea level: That’s where you’ll find Wamberg, one of the highest-located church villages of Germany with only about 30 inhabitants. Up there, time seems to have stopped. Traditional rustic architecture and nature wherever you look. Soothing peace and quiet surrounds you and the view of the Wetterstein mountain range with the Alpspitze and Zugspitze mountains is simply breathtaking. In summer and in winter, the quaint village with plenty of Bavarian charm is a great place to relax.

The farms from the 18th and 19th century underline the traditional character of the village. The church of St. Anna with its art-historically important high altar – a work of sculptor Andreas Onich – is well worth a visit, too. The high altar piece shows a rendition of the popular subject of “Virgin and Child with Saint Anne” – a Christian iconography of Saint Anne, her daughter Mary and her grandson Jesus.

Getting to the church village of Wamberg: Starting at the valley station of the Eckbauernbahn cable car, a hiking trail leads you up to Wamberg in about 40 minutes walking time. An alternative route leads you from the hospital up to the mountain village in about 45 minutes. The march is definitely worth the effort, promise!

Tip for winter: In the colder months, you can look forward to hiking and sledging from the Eckbauer mountain station via Wamberg back to the Olympic Ski Stadium!
