Historic bobsleigh run in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

In the shade of the forest above Lake Riessersee: That’s where it’s located – the bobsleigh run that used to be the world’s most dangerous run. With top speeds of 120 kilometres per hour, audacious athletes raced down the curvy track down into the valley. In 1936, the natural ice run was a competition site for the Olympic Winter Games. Until 1966, Bavarian and German championships as well as European and World Championships were regularly held there. What used to be the heart of the bob sport has been a popular excursion destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen ever since it was put under protection as a historic landmark in 1973.

With sturdy footwear, you can hike up the bobsleigh run relatively easily. Starting point is the train station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you’d like to take the car: At the car park right by the Aule Alm and at Lake Riessersee, there are plenty of parking spaces.

About 350 m before the finish line, the Bob Museum is located. 17 historic bobs and numerous exhibits let you go on a journey back in time to former heroes and their somewhat tragic stories. Original video footage lets you experience the atmosphere of bygone sports events almost first-hand.
