NATURAL JEWEL AT AN ALTITUDE OF 785 METERS
Lake Riessersee
Lake Riessersee
WORTH A VISIT IN WINTER AND SUMMER!
South of Garmisch at an altitude of 785 meters in the Wetterstein mountains lies a gem which is rich in history: Lake Riessersee. The origins of the Riessersee date back to the Middle Ages. Back then, the lake was artificially created in a natural forest opening. Mt. Waxenstein (2,277 meters) and Mt. Wank rise up behind the picturesque body of water near the Zugspitze. On a clear day, you can even see the Zugspitze massif reflected in the water.
The circular path around the lake attracts locals and visitors all year round. In summer, those seeking relaxation can cool off in the refreshing waters, while in winter you can ice skate on the lake.
Numerous competitions, including the 1936 Winter Olympics, were held on Lake Riessersee. The world-famous Olympic bobsleigh run is also in the immediate vicinity.
